Iris setosa Description

Iris setosa is a hardy rhizomatous perennial with narrow upright leaves and distinctive blue to violet flowers. The broad falls are marked with darker veining and pale or yellowish signals, while the standards are unusually small, giving the flowers a characteristic open shape. Depending on form and conditions, plants generally reach around 50 to 90cm high. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains consistently moist but drains reasonably well. It tolerates cold and exposed conditions particularly well and is a dependable choice for cool Irish gardens. Use beside ponds, in damp meadow-style planting or through moisture-retentive perennial borders. Remove old flower stems after blooming and divide overcrowded clumps in late summer or early autumn.
