Iris ensata ‘White Ladies’ is a clump-forming Japanese water iris producing broad, double pure white flowers with small lemon-yellow signals at their centres. The flowers open widely during summer on upright stems reaching around 90cm, above fans of strap-like green leaves. Its clear colouring makes it particularly effective beside dark water, green foliage and richly coloured moisture-loving perennials. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, acidic to neutral soil that remains consistently moist during active growth. It tolerates boggy summer conditions but should not remain deeply submerged throughout winter. Avoid lime and chalky soil. Remove spent flower stems after blooming and divide mature clumps when they become crowded, replanting promptly into moisture-retentive ground.
