Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ Description

Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’, commonly called Japanese blood grass, is a deciduous ornamental grass with narrow upright leaves that emerge green and develop increasingly vivid red colouring from the tips downward as summer progresses. Mature clumps generally reach around 40 to 50cm high and spread gradually through short rhizomes. Grow in full sun or light partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. Strong light encourages the deepest red foliage. It dies back during winter and fresh shoots emerge in spring. Remove old leaves before new growth begins. Plain green reverted shoots should be removed promptly, as they can be more vigorous than the red form. Avoid planting where uncontrolled spread would be difficult to manage.
