Ilex × meserveae ‘Heckenblau’ is a dense evergreen blue holly with glossy dark green to blue-green foliage and a naturally upright, well-branched habit. It is particularly suited to evergreen hedging and screening, where its tolerance of regular clipping allows a formal or semi-formal outline to be maintained. Mature plants can reach around 2 to 3 metres high if left largely unpruned. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moisture-retentive but drains freely. Meserve hollies are notably cold tolerant and perform reliably in Irish conditions. Where berry production or pollination is important, confirm the sex of the particular stock supplied and pair it with a compatible holly if necessary. Prune in late summer to maintain shape.
