Hydrangea petiolaris ‘Take a Chance’ Description

Hydrangea petiolaris ‘Take a Chance’ is a variegated climbing hydrangea with heart-shaped foliage irregularly splashed and edged in creamy white. Broad white lacecap flower heads appear in early summer once the plant has matured, while aerial roots allow the stems to attach naturally to sound masonry and tree trunks. Growth can be slow initially and is generally less vigorous than plain Hydrangea petiolaris. Grow in partial shade or dappled light in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. Avoid hot exposed positions, which can scorch the pale leaf markings. It is hardy in sheltered Irish gardens. Tie young stems temporarily until they attach and remove any vigorous all-green shoots before they begin to dominate the variegated growth.
