Hydrangea paniculata ‘Phantom’ is a substantial deciduous shrub noted for its exceptionally large, dense conical flower heads. The panicles open creamy white in midsummer before gradually developing pink and blush tones as they age. Strong stems support the flowers above dark green foliage, although the mature shrub still requires adequate space, generally reaching around 2 metres high and wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It is fully hardy and dependable in Ireland. Flowers develop on new growth, so prune in late winter or early spring. Moderate rather than severe pruning produces a strong framework capable of supporting the huge flower heads, particularly after heavy summer rain.
