Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Lanarth White’ is a classic lacecap hydrangea producing broad flat flower heads from midsummer into autumn. Large pure white sterile florets form a conspicuous outer ring around smaller fertile flowers that may be blue in acidic soil or pink to mauve in more alkaline conditions. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 metres high and wide, forming a substantial rounded shrub. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It is hardy and performs particularly well in sheltered Irish gardens. Strong afternoon sun can mark the white florets, while late frost may damage flower buds. Prune lightly in spring, removing faded flower heads and dead wood while retaining the healthy older framework.
