Heuchera Description

Heuchera is a broad genus of clump-forming perennials grown primarily for their decorative foliage. Depending on the cultivar, leaves may be green, purple, bronze, caramel, silver, red or almost black, often with contrasting veins or undersides. Fine stems of small bell-shaped flowers appear from late spring through summer and attract pollinating insects. Most varieties grow around 20 to 50cm high in leaf, with flowers held above. Plant in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. Partial shade is ideal for many cultivars, although darker-leaved forms often tolerate more sun when moisture is reliable. Avoid burying the crown and protect plants from prolonged winter waterlogging. Lift and replant older clumps if the woody crown gradually rises above soil level.
