Hedera colchica Description

Hedera colchica, commonly called Persian ivy, is a vigorous evergreen climber distinguished by its exceptionally large, leathery green leaves. Young stems climb using aerial roots and can cover substantial walls, fences, tree trunks and banks, while established plants may eventually reach 10 metres or more. Mature growth can produce rounded clusters of nectar-rich flowers in autumn followed by dark berries for birds. Grow in full shade, partial shade or sun in fertile, well-drained soil. It copes particularly well with dry shade once established and is dependable in Ireland. Its growth is too vigorous for small walls or delicate structures, so prune regularly around gutters, windows and rooflines. All parts are harmful if eaten, and the foliage may irritate sensitive skin.
