Exochorda racemosa ‘Blushing Pearl’ forms a compact deciduous shrub with arching branches and fresh green oval leaves. Clusters of rounded pink buds appear in spring and open into pure white, five-petalled flowers, producing the pearl-like effect that gives the shrub its common name. Mature plants generally reach around 1.2 to 1.5 metres high and wide, making this selection easier to accommodate than larger pearl bushes. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. It is hardy and dependable in Irish gardens, although shelter from strong wind helps preserve the flowers. Prune immediately after flowering if necessary, removing a few older stems and shortening overlong shoots. Avoid routine winter pruning because the spring display is produced on growth formed during the previous season.
