Eupatorium maculatum ‘Riesenschirm’ Description

Eupatorium maculatum ‘Riesenschirm’, now commonly placed within the genus Eutrochium, is a tall clump-forming perennial selected for its exceptionally broad flower heads. Sturdy reddish-purple stems carry whorled green leaves and support large domes of dusky rose-pink flowers from late summer into autumn. The blooms attract butterflies and many other pollinating insects when fewer perennials remain in flower. Mature plants reach approximately 1.6 to 2 metres high and around 1 metre wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains reliably moist. It suits the back of mixed borders, pond margins and naturalistic planting. The strong stems usually remain upright without support. Leave the dried heads standing for winter structure, then cut everything back to ground level before spring growth begins.
