Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’ Description

Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’ forms a vigorous evergreen shrub with leathery leaves marked by broad, irregular golden-yellow margins. The leaf undersides are silvery, adding further brightness when the branches move in the wind. Small creamy-white flowers appear during autumn and release a surprisingly strong fragrance, sometimes followed by orange-red spring fruits. Mature plants can reach 2.5 to 4 metres if left unclipped and make effective screens or informal hedges. Grow in full sun or partial shade in most well-drained soils. It tolerates drought, pollution and salt-laden winds once established and performs reliably in Irish coastal gardens. Trim in spring or after flowering to control its size, and remove any plain green shoots promptly.
