Cotoneaster franchetii Description

Cotoneaster franchetii forms a dense evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub with arching branches and glossy grey-green leaves that are silvery white beneath. Clusters of white flowers tinged with pink appear in early summer and attract bees, followed by abundant oblong orange-scarlet berries in autumn. Growing to around 2.5 to 4 metres high and wide, it works well as an informal hedge, screen or substantial background shrub. Plant in sun or partial shade in almost any moist but well-drained soil. It is exceptionally hardy and tolerates exposed and coastal Irish gardens. Regular pruning is unnecessary, although overgrown stems can be shortened after flowering. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten.
