Cotinus coggygria ‘Magical Torch’ Description

Cotinus coggygria ‘Magical Torch’, also known as ‘Kolmagito’, forms an upright deciduous shrub with rich red-purple foliage that retains strong colour through summer. Large soft pink flower panicles rise above the leaves from midsummer, producing the hazy appearance responsible for the name smoke bush. In autumn, the foliage develops glowing orange and red shades before falling. Mature plants reach approximately 2.5 to 3 metres high and wide. Grow in full sun for the deepest foliage colour, in moderately fertile soil that drains freely. It is hardy and suitable for Irish gardens, although heavy waterlogged ground should be avoided. Minimal pruning preserves flowering, while hard spring pruning produces larger leaves but fewer flower plumes.
