Corylus avellana ‘Medusa’ Description

Corylus avellana ‘Medusa’ is a compact corkscrew hazel with densely branched stems that twist, curl and interweave as they grow. The contorted framework is particularly ornamental after the leaves fall, while long yellow catkins add interest from late winter into early spring. Rounded green leaves cover the shrub during summer, and occasional edible nuts may form where pollination conditions are suitable. Mature plants reach approximately 2 to 2.5 metres high and wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is fully hardy and dependable in Irish gardens. Remove any straight shoots arising from below the graft, as these can outgrow and spoil the compact contorted plant.
