Cornus × rutgersensis ‘Hyperion’ Description

Cornus × rutgersensis ‘Hyperion’ is a vigorous deciduous hybrid dogwood developed through the Rutgers breeding programme. Large creamy-white bracts, often measuring 10 to 15cm across, are produced so abundantly in late spring and early summer that they can nearly conceal the foliage. Strawberry-like red fruits follow and attract birds, while the dark green leaves develop yellow, purple and orange autumn tones. Mature trees generally reach around 4.5 to 6 metres high and wide with a dense upright crown. Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acidic soil that remains moist but drains freely. A sheltered Irish position protects the spring display from cold wind and late frost.
