Clematis vitalba Description

Clematis vitalba is a very vigorous deciduous climber capable of exceeding 7 metres. Clusters of small creamy-white, four-petalled flowers appear from midsummer into early autumn and attract pollinating insects. They are followed by masses of feathery silver seed heads that persist well into winter and give the plant its common name, old man’s beard. It can rapidly overwhelm small trees, shrubs and garden structures, particularly in Ireland’s mild, moist conditions, so it is best reserved for large wildlife gardens, woodland edges or robust boundary planting. Grow in sun or shade in most moist but well-drained soils. Cut it back firmly in late winter to restrict its spread and remove unwanted seedlings before they become established.
