Clematis montana ‘Alba’ Description

Clematis montana ‘Alba’, correctly treated as Clematis montana var. alba, is a vigorous deciduous climber capable of covering a substantial area. Masses of small, single white flowers open in late spring and early summer above divided green foliage, creating a bright cascading display. Mature stems can reach 4 to 8 metres, so it is best suited to large pergolas, outbuildings, long fences and established trees rather than small arches or containers. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is hardy and grows strongly in Ireland’s mild, moist conditions. No routine pruning is needed, but excessive growth can be shortened immediately after flowering. Avoid hard winter pruning, which removes the following spring’s flower-bearing stems.
