Centaurea hypoleuca ‘John Coutts’, also listed simply as Centaurea ‘John Coutts’, forms a vigorous clump of jagged, deeply lobed green leaves with silvery-white undersides. Large purplish-pink flower heads, often around 6cm across, appear on upright stems during summer and may continue into early autumn. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies and work well in cottage gardens, informal mixed borders and pollinator planting. Mature plants reach around 40 to 60cm high and spread steadily through the border. Grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is hardy in Ireland but can develop powdery mildew where air circulation is poor. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn.
