Carpenteria californica Description

Carpenteria californica is a bushy evergreen shrub with narrow, glossy dark green leaves and attractive peeling bark on older stems. Large, lightly fragrant white flowers open in early and midsummer, each centred by a prominent cluster of golden-yellow stamens. It usually reaches around 2 metres in height and spread and can be trained against a sheltered south or west-facing wall. Grow in full sun in fertile, freely draining soil and protect it from cold drying winds. It is suitable for mild, sheltered Irish gardens but may be damaged by severe frost or persistent winter wet. Prune lightly after flowering only where shaping is needed, as hard cutting can spoil its natural framework.
