Berberis × frikartii ‘Amstelveen’ Description

Berberis × frikartii ‘Amstelveen’ is a vigorous evergreen shrub with dense, arching branches and glossy dark green, spine-tipped leaves. The foliage is pale beneath and may develop attractive red flushing during winter. Pale yellow flowers appear along the drooping shoots in late spring, followed by blue-black berries in autumn. Growing to around 1 metre high and 1 to 1.5 metres wide, it works well as a low informal hedge, ground-covering shrub or secure boundary plant. Grow in full sun or partial shade in almost any moist but well-drained soil. It is hardy and reliable in Irish gardens, including exposed sites. Wear gloves when pruning because both the stems and leaves are sharply spined.
