Azalea japonica ‘Königstein’ Description

Azalea japonica ‘Königstein’ forms a low, spreading evergreen shrub with small dark green leaves and a broad, ground-covering outline. In May, numerous purple to violet-purple funnel-shaped flowers open across the foliage, creating a richly coloured mound. Mature plants generally reach around 40 to 80cm high and may spread to 1 metre or more, making this cultivar useful on banks, at the front of ericaceous borders or in a wide container. Grow in partial shade or moderate sun in moist but freely draining acidic soil. It is very hardy and suitable for Irish gardens, although shelter from cold drying winds will help preserve the evergreen foliage. Mulch annually and avoid alkaline conditions.
