Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Spaethii’ Description

Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Spaethii’ is a large deciduous sycamore grown for the contrasting colour of its foliage. Broad, five-lobed leaves mature to dark green above and deep red-purple beneath, with red leaf stalks adding further colour. Yellow-green spring flowers are followed by red-tinted winged seeds, while the leaves turn yellow before falling. It is a vigorous tree that may eventually reach around 20 metres in height with a broad spreading crown. Use it as a specimen in parkland, on a large lawn or where a substantial wind-tolerant tree is required. It grows in full sun or partial shade and accepts most moist but well-drained soils. Its mature size makes it unsuitable for small or medium-sized gardens.
