How to Grow Ferns in Pots and Containers

Ferns can grow very well in pots, but a container changes the conditions around their roots. There is less growing medium to hold moisture, drainage depends entirely on the pot and compost, and roots eventually run out of space. A fern that is easy in open ground can therefore need more regular attention when it is container-grown.

For most outdoor ferns, success comes from four things: choose a fern that suits the size and shape of the container, avoid overpotting, use a loose moisture-retentive but well-aerated growing mix, and water according to the condition of the compost rather than a fixed schedule.

Containers are especially useful where you want ferns on a patio, doorstep, balcony or paved area, where a plant has particular soil requirements, or where you want the flexibility to move a less hardy specimen into protection. They are also useful for controlling ferns with spreading rhizomes that would otherwise have more room to travel in open ground.

1. Choose a fern that suits life in a container

The best container fern is not simply the smallest plant in the garden centre. Look at its mature size, growth habit and preferred moisture level before deciding whether it belongs in a pot.

Ferns with erect, semi-erect or short-creeping rhizomes are generally easy to display in conventional pots because their fronds remain grouped around a relatively contained root system. Long-creeping ferns can also be grown in containers, but they are often better suited to wider pots, troughs or baskets that give the rhizome space to extend.

A vigorous spreading fern may be useful in a large trough where its movement can be contained. The same plant can become awkward in a small upright pot because the growing rhizome reaches the edge quickly. At the other extreme, a very large architectural fern can make an impressive specimen but will eventually need enough root volume and physical stability to support its mature crown.

When choosing, consider:

  • Mature height and width: allow room for the full spread of the fronds, not just the nursery plant.
  • Rhizome habit: clumping and short-creeping ferns are usually easier in ordinary pots, while longer-creeping types benefit from broader containers.
  • Moisture needs: a fern that wants dependable moisture will need more attention in a small exposed pot than in a large shaded container.
  • Winter behaviour: know whether the fern is evergreen or deciduous so normal winter dieback is not mistaken for failure.
  • Hardiness: if a fern is only marginally suitable for your climate, a movable container can make winter protection easier.

2. Do not put a small fern into an oversized pot

It is tempting to give a fern a very large container so it will not need repotting for years, but too much unused compost can create the opposite problem. If the root system occupies only a small part of a large volume of wet growing medium, the surrounding compost can stay damp for too long and lose the air spaces healthy roots need.

Choose a pot that is comfortably larger than the existing root ball without surrounding it with a large reservoir of unused compost. When the fern genuinely fills that space, move it up gradually rather than jumping several pot sizes at once.

Pot shape matters too. A broad container can suit ferns that spread through short or medium rhizomes, while a deeper pot may give more stable moisture and root volume to a larger specimen. Very small decorative containers dry rapidly and can turn watering into a constant task.

If the pot will sit on a patio, deck or balcony, also think about the weight once it contains wet compost and a mature fern. Large containers are much easier to position before they are filled.

3. Drainage holes are essential for most potted ferns

Most cultivated ferns prefer a root zone that is moist but still contains air. A pot with poor drainage can remain saturated after heavy watering or prolonged rain, and roots may begin to decline even though the foliage appears to be suffering from a lack of water.

Use a container with unobstructed drainage holes and make sure excess water can actually escape. Pots standing flat on a surface can sometimes drain slowly, so raising them slightly on pot feet or supports can keep the holes clear and help water move away.

Do not routinely leave an ordinary garden fern standing in a saucer full of water. A moisture-loving fern is not automatically an aquatic plant, and constant saturation can displace air from the compost. If water remains in a saucer long after watering, empty it unless the species is specifically adapted to swamp or aquatic conditions.

Decorative pots without drainage are safer used as outer containers. Keep the fern in a separate pot with drainage holes, remove it for watering, let the excess drain, and then return it to the decorative outer pot.

4. Use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-aerated potting mix

A useful fern container mix has to do two jobs that can appear contradictory: it must retain enough moisture to prevent repeated drying, but it must also keep enough open structure for roots to receive oxygen.

Organic matter helps hold moisture and nutrients, while coarse components such as bark, perlite, pumice or similar materials can help maintain pore spaces and drainage. Heavy, compacted material stays wet for too long, while an extremely coarse mix may dry so quickly that the fern needs constant watering.

The exact mix should also reflect the fern. Some species prefer more acidic conditions, while others grow naturally around limestone and need a less acidic root environment. Do not assume that every fern wants exactly the same compost simply because all are ferns.

5. Plant the fern at the correct level

When moving a fern into a container, keep the crown or active growing point at approximately the same level at which it was already growing. Do not bury an exposed crown beneath a deep layer of compost.

If the fern has a creeping rhizome, position the active growing tip so it has room to move across the surface rather than placing it directly against the side of the pot. This may leave the existing foliage slightly off-centre, but it gives the plant more useful growing space.

Gently loosen only roots that are tightly congested around the outside of the root ball. Fill around the roots without packing the compost hard. Firm it enough to support the plant while preserving the air spaces that drainage depends on.

Leave a small gap between the compost surface and the top of the container. That creates room for water to collect briefly and soak into the compost instead of running straight over the rim.

6. Water potted ferns according to the compost, not the calendar

Container-grown ferns often need closer monitoring than plants in the ground because the available root volume is smaller. How quickly a pot dries depends on its size, material, growing mix, the size of the fern, temperature, wind and exposure.

Small pots dry faster than large ones. Porous terracotta or unglazed clay loses moisture faster than plastic or glazed containers. Coarse free-draining mixes also need checking more often than mixes that hold water for longer.

Before watering, feel the compost below the surface or lift a manageable pot and judge its weight. Water when the root zone is starting to dry rather than because a set number of days has passed. Do not wait for the fern to wilt as your normal signal.

When water is needed, apply it thoroughly and gently until excess begins to leave through the drainage holes. This wets the whole root ball and also helps flush accumulated salts from the growing medium.

A badly dried pot can be deceptive. If the compost has shrunk away from the sides, water may run down the gap and out through the drainage hole while the root ball remains dry. Rewet slowly and repeatedly, or soak the container until the root ball has absorbed moisture, then allow it to drain fully.

Irish rainfall does not remove the need to check pots. Containers beneath eaves, beside walls, under dense tree canopies or in sheltered corners may receive much less rain than the open garden. Wind can also dry a container faster than surrounding ground.

7. Feed container ferns modestly during active growth

Ferns in garden soil can draw nutrients from a much larger root area, and organic matter can be replenished naturally or through surface mulches. A container has a fixed quantity of compost, so its nutrient supply gradually becomes depleted.

That does not mean ferns need heavy feeding. Excess fertiliser can damage roots or encourage soft growth, particularly if salts build up in the potting mix. Use a balanced feed modestly during active growth and avoid allowing concentrated granular fertiliser to sit against the fern's crown or tender new fronds.

Reduce feeding as the growing season winds down. Pushing late soft growth is rarely useful when the plant is moving towards cooler autumn and winter conditions.

If the fern has been in the same pot for several years and growth is poor, feeding may not be the real solution. Compacted compost, congested roots or poor drainage can all limit growth even when nutrients are available.

8. Repot when the fern becomes root-bound, not simply every year

A healthy fern does not need to be repotted just because another spring has arrived. Repot when the plant is genuinely running out of useful root space or when the growing medium has deteriorated.

Signs of a root-bound fern include:

  • the pot filling densely with roots;
  • rapid drying soon after watering;
  • slower growth and smaller new fronds;
  • yellowing that persists despite suitable watering and light;
  • rhizomes or crowns pressing against the edge of the container;
  • active growth becoming crowded around the outside while the centre of an old clump declines.

For a single-crowned or unbranched fern, the usual answer is to move to the next suitable pot size. A fern with several healthy crowns or branching rhizomes may instead be divided so that part of the plant can return to the same pot with fresh compost.

Do not cut through a fern simply because it looks crowded. Division only works where each new section can retain a viable growing point and enough healthy root to support it.

9. Match the position to the fern's light and exposure needs

Putting a fern in a container does not change its basic light requirements. A woodland fern that prefers filtered light will not become a sun plant simply because it is potted.

Most container ferns are easiest to manage where they receive useful daylight without prolonged hot midday sun, especially when the pot is small or exposed. Bright shade, dappled light or a position with morning or late-day sun can suit many outdoor garden ferns, but the correct exposure still depends on the species.

Wind deserves attention as well. Fronds can be damaged physically, and moving air increases moisture loss from both foliage and compost. A sheltered patio or doorway may therefore be much easier than an exposed upper balcony, even when both receive similar light.

Containers are movable, so use that flexibility. If a fern is scorching, drying repeatedly or leaning into strong wind, changing the position may solve more than adding extra water.

10. Adjust container care through winter

As temperatures fall and growth slows, most ferns use less water. Continue to check the compost, but do not keep a dormant or slow-growing pot constantly saturated simply because it needed frequent watering in summer.

Evergreen ferns may retain useful foliage through winter, while deciduous ferns can lose their fronds completely and return in spring. A bare deciduous pot is not necessarily dead. Check the plant's normal growth habit before assuming winter dieback is a problem.

Containers are particularly useful for ferns whose hardiness is uncertain because they can be moved to a more protected position. A sheltered cold frame, unheated protected space or other appropriate overwintering site can be easier than trying to protect a marginal fern in an exposed patio position.

For hardy outdoor ferns left in place, maintain drainage and avoid leaving pots sitting in stagnant water through prolonged wet weather.

Common problems with ferns in pots

The fern wilts even though you water it regularly

What may be happening: the pot may be drying too quickly, the root ball may have become difficult to rewet, or the roots may be damaged by excessive moisture.

What to do: check the compost before adding more water. A very light pot and dry root ball need thorough rewetting. A heavy pot with soggy compost needs better drainage and less frequent watering.

The compost stays wet for days

What may be happening: the container is too large, the mix is too dense, drainage is obstructed or the plant is using very little water.

What to do: stop watering until the root zone begins to recover, check that drainage holes are open and review whether the potting mix is sufficiently aerated. If the fern is already declining, inspect roots for soft or decaying tissue.

The fern needs watering constantly

What may be happening: the pot may be too small, the fern may be root-bound, or the container may be very porous or exposed to wind.

What to do: check for congested roots. If the plant has filled the pot, move it up one size or divide it where its growth habit permits. A more sheltered position can also reduce unnecessary moisture loss.

New fronds are getting smaller

What may be happening: root congestion, depleted compost, unsuitable light or poor drainage can all reduce vigour.

What to do: do not automatically increase feeding. Check the root system, compost condition, light and watering first. Repotting into fresh growing medium may be more useful than adding fertiliser to an exhausted or waterlogged root ball.

The pot tips over or the fronds spill into a path

What may be happening: the fern has outgrown the scale or stability of its container.

What to do: move it to a broader, more stable pot or choose a smaller-growing fern for that position. Mature frond spread should be part of container selection from the beginning.

Frequently asked questions about growing ferns in pots

Can outdoor ferns live permanently in pots?

Yes. Many ferns can remain container-grown for years if the pot suits their growth habit and they receive suitable moisture, drainage, light and periodic repotting. The main difference from open ground is that root space, water and nutrients are all more limited.

Do ferns need deep pots?

Not all of them. Pot shape should suit the fern's root and rhizome habit. Clumping ferns can grow well in conventional pots, while creeping ferns often benefit from more width. A larger fern also needs enough depth and weight for a stable root environment.
