3. Match shade with soil moisture
Light level is only one part of fern selection. Many failures blamed on shade are actually caused by the root zone being too dry or too wet.
A typical woodland-type soil holds moisture but also contains plenty of air. Organic matter and leaf mould help create that structure. Heavy compacted ground may remain wet after rain yet still be difficult for fern roots because the soil contains too little air. At the other extreme, sandy or root-filled soil may drain so quickly that a shaded plant is repeatedly stressed by drought.
Before planting, check the soil a few centimetres below the surface rather than judging it by appearance. A dark shaded bed can still be dry underneath, particularly close to mature trees, walls and hedges.
4. Shade beneath trees needs special attention
Deciduous trees often provide the filtered light that suits ferns well, but their roots can be strong competitors. Some tree species also produce dense surface roots that make digging difficult and remove water quickly from the upper soil.
Where competition is moderate, a layer of organic mulch can help conserve moisture and gradually improve the surface soil. Newly planted ferns need closer watering until their roots extend beyond the original planting area.

5. Use soil reaction to narrow the choice
Ferns are often grouped together as though they all want acidic woodland soil, but there are important differences.
- For acidic shade: Blechnum spicant is a strong example and should not be planted in limy ground. Polypodium vulgare also suits acidic, moist shaded conditions.
- For neutral soil: Polystichum setiferum is adaptable and performs well in moist, lightly shaded ground.

Fern shade gardens are often planted beneath shrubs, beside paths or in narrow borders where space is limited. Mature habit therefore matters as much as height.
A broad Polystichum setiferum needs room for its arching fronds. Dryopteris filix-mas can become a substantial upright plant. Polypodium vulgare stays much lower but spreads by creeping rhizomes. Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum' is smaller and works more easily near the front of a border.
Choosing by nursery-pot size alone can create problems later. Allow for the mature spread of each fern and decide whether you want a distinct clump, an architectural specimen or a plant that gradually forms a colony.

Shaded parts of an Irish garden can vary greatly even within a small space. A sheltered north-facing border may stay evenly cool, while ground beneath a mature tree can become dry despite regular rain. Heavy soil in another shaded corner may hold water for long periods. The best fern is therefore determined by the combination of light, moisture, drainage and soil reaction.
For a simple starting point, use evergreen ferns such as Polystichum setiferum or hart's tongue fern for structure, then add a deciduous fern such as Japanese painted fern where you want lighter colour and seasonal change. - Assuming all shade is moist. Tree roots, walls and overhanging canopies can create very dry soil.
- Planting every fern in deep shade. Many ferns make fuller growth in filtered or light shade rather than the darkest position available.
