Azalea ‘Hotspur Red’ Description

Azalea ‘Hotspur Red’ forms an open, bushy deciduous shrub with mid-green leaves and vivid late-spring flowers. The funnel-shaped blooms are deep orange-red with an orange flare in the throat, creating a warm and highly visible display. Growing to around 1 to 1.5 metres in height and spread, it suits smaller ericaceous borders, woodland edges and informal shrub planting. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich acidic soil. It is hardy in Irish gardens, although shelter will help protect the flowers from strong wind and late frost. Mulch annually with leaf mould or composted bark and avoid planting in alkaline or lime-rich ground.
