Azalea japonica ‘Gorbella’ is a compact evergreen shrub with a naturally spreading habit and small green leaves. Fairly large dark pink, funnel-shaped flowers appear in abundance from late spring into early summer, creating a bold display across the broad mound of foliage. It generally reaches around 75cm to 1 metre high and can spread equally wide or wider, making it useful as a low specimen or massed ground-level feature. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in moist but well-drained acidic soil. Ireland’s relatively cool conditions suit it well, although the shallow roots should be protected from drought with an annual mulch. Avoid lime and stagnant winter moisture.
