Leucothoe fontanesiana ‘Whitewater’ Description

Leucothoe fontanesiana ‘Whitewater’ is a compact evergreen shrub with arching stems and strongly variegated foliage. New leaves emerge creamy white with pink and bronze flushes before developing green centres and broad pale margins. Cool weather can bring additional red and purple colouring. Small white bell-shaped flowers appear in spring. Plants form a low, spreading mound useful beneath taller shrubs, beside shaded paths and in ericaceous containers. Grow in partial shade in acidic, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Strong afternoon sun can scorch the pale leaves, while prolonged drought causes stress. It is hardy and particularly effective in cool Irish gardens. Prune only to remove damaged growth and cut out any reverted all-green shoots promptly.
