Lettuce leaf mix contains several loose-leaf lettuce varieties rather than a single uniform cultivar, so individual plants may differ in colour, leaf shape, texture and growth rate. Mixtures commonly combine green, bronze or red leaves to provide variety in salads. Sow successionally from spring through late summer in fertile, moisture-retentive soil or containers. Young leaves can be cut repeatedly once they reach a useful size, allowing the central growth to continue. Grow in sun or partial shade and water regularly, particularly during warm dry weather, as drought can encourage bitter leaves and bolting. Lettuce performs well in Ireland’s generally cool summers. Protect young plants from slugs and snails and sow smaller batches every few weeks for a steady harvest.
