Kirengeshoma palmata Description

Kirengeshoma palmata, yellow wax bells, is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial with bold, palmately lobed leaves carried on dark maroon-tinged stems. Branched sprays of fleshy, narrow bell-shaped creamy-yellow flowers appear in late summer and early autumn, bringing colour to shaded borders when many woodland plants have finished flowering. Mature clumps generally reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and spread gradually by rhizomes. Grow in partial or full shade in fertile, humus-rich, acidic soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Shelter from strong winds, which can damage the large leaves and stems. It is hardy and particularly suited to cool, moist woodland-style Irish gardens. Cut the stems to ground level after they die back in autumn.
