Hydrangea paniculata ‘Baby Lace’ forms a compact upright deciduous shrub with dark green oval leaves carried on contrasting reddish stems. Dense conical panicles of creamy-white flowers appear from late summer into early autumn and remain well supported by the sturdy framework. Mature plants generally reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and somewhat less in width. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Unlike blue and pink macrophylla hydrangeas, flower colour is not controlled by soil acidity. It is fully hardy and reliable in Ireland. Flowers develop on new growth, so prune in late winter or early spring, shortening the previous season’s stems to encourage a strong, compact flowering framework.
