Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Rosie Purple’ is a compact deciduous mophead hydrangea with broad green foliage and dense rounded flower heads in violet, plum and purple shades. Blooms may become pinker in neutral or alkaline soil, while acidic conditions encourage cooler purple-blue colouring. Plants generally reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Use ericaceous compost and rainwater for container plants where purple-blue colour is a priority. It is hardy in sheltered Irish gardens but late frost may damage developing buds. Prune lightly in spring, removing only old flowers, dead wood and weak stems.
