Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Midnight Pearl’ Description

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Midnight Pearl’ is a compact deciduous shrub selected for the contrast between its dark-toned foliage and colourful flower heads. Leaves can develop deep bronze, burgundy or purple shades, while summer blooms appear in rich pink, purple or violet tones depending on soil chemistry. Plants generally reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Some direct light helps develop darker foliage, although harsh afternoon sun should be avoided. It performs best in a sheltered Irish garden or substantial container. Prune lightly in spring, removing dead wood and faded flowers while retaining healthy previous-season stems.
