Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Merveille Sanguinea’ Description

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Merveille Sanguinea’ is a distinctive deciduous shrub with dark reddish-purple stems and foliage heavily flushed with burgundy, particularly on new growth. Rounded mophead flowers appear in deep crimson, wine-red or purple shades, with colour influenced by soil chemistry. Mature plants generally reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Some good light is needed to develop the darkest foliage, but hot midday sun may scorch the leaves. It performs best in a sheltered Irish position protected from late frost. Prune lightly in spring, removing faded flowers and dead stems while preserving the healthy dark framework.
