Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bodensee’ is a robust deciduous mophead hydrangea producing large, densely packed flower heads from midsummer into early autumn. The blooms are blue in suitably acidic soil and become mauve or pink in neutral to alkaline conditions. Mature plants generally reach around 1.2 to 1.5 metres high and wide, forming a broad rounded shrub. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It is hardy and well suited to sheltered Irish gardens, although late frost can damage developing flower buds. Blue colour can be encouraged with ericaceous conditions and rainwater. Prune lightly in spring, removing faded blooms and dead wood without cutting back healthy stems.
