Gaultheria procumbens
Checkerberry
Gaultheria procumbens, the checkerberry or wintergreen, is a dwarf evergreen shrub to just 15cm tall. Its rounded aromatic leaves turn red in winter, while summer brings small pinkish-white bell flowers, followed by bright scarlet berries. With its spreading, suckering habit, it is ideal for shaded rockeries, woodland edges, or containers. Awarded the RHS AGM, it is fragrant, low-maintenance, and a delight through the year.
