Fragaria ‘Montana’ is a compact cultivated strawberry producing fresh green divided leaves, white flowers and edible red fruits. It can flower and crop repeatedly through the warmer months when plants receive sufficient sun, moisture and feeding. The spreading runners make it useful for strawberry beds and raised planters, while container and hanging-basket growing keeps the fruit away from soil and allows easier picking. Grow in full sun in fertile, humus-rich soil or compost that remains evenly moist but drains freely. Water at the base and feed with a high-potassium fertiliser once flowering begins. Protect ripening berries from birds and slugs, and remove damaged fruit promptly during damp weather. Replace older plants every few years, using healthy rooted runners to maintain productive stock.
