Euonymus japonicus ‘Happiness’ forms a compact, upright evergreen shrub with densely branched stems and glossy foliage. New leaves emerge vivid golden yellow, gradually developing greener tones as they mature, so fresh growth remains especially bright against the older leaves. Growing to around 60cm high with a narrower spread, it suits smaller gardens, border edging, low formal planting and patio containers. Plant in full sun or partial shade in most fertile, moist but well-drained soils, including mildly alkaline ground. It is hardy in many Irish gardens, although shelter from severe coastal winds can prevent leaf scorch. Trim during summer to maintain a dense shape and encourage further colourful young growth. The foliage is harmful if eaten.
