Calluna vulgaris ‘Painted’ Description

Calluna vulgaris ‘Painted’ is a compact common heather that has been sprayed with a weather-resistant decorative coating, often in bright shades not found naturally in the plant. It is best regarded as a seasonal container or entrance display rather than a named botanical cultivar. The painted colour will remain on the coated growth for some time, but any fresh shoots produced later will emerge in their natural green shade. Heavy coating can restrict the plant’s normal functions, so long-term survival may be less reliable than with an untreated heather. Keep it outdoors in full sun in acidic, well-drained soil or ericaceous compost. Water carefully without waterlogging and do not expect the artificial colour to continue on future growth.
