Buddleja davidii ‘Ile de France’ is a large, bushy deciduous shrub with arching branches and narrow lance-shaped leaves. Long, lightly fragrant racemes of deep violet-purple flowers with yellow-orange eyes appear from summer into autumn, attracting butterflies and numerous other pollinators. Mature plants can reach approximately 3.5 metres high and wide, so this cultivar is better suited to substantial borders than small containers or restricted gardens. Grow in full sun or light shade in moist but well-drained soil. It is hardy and reliable in Ireland, including many coastal positions. Prune hard in early spring to a permanent low framework, removing weak growth and encouraging strong young stems that will carry the season’s flowers.
