Brassica rapa ‘Sweet Marble’ is a modern turnip producing smooth, rounded roots with creamy-white skin and a softly contrasting purple crown. The white flesh is tender, crisp and unusually sweet, making young roots suitable for eating raw as well as roasting, steaming or adding to soups and stews. Sow directly in full sun in fertile, well-prepared soil, making short successional sowings from spring into late summer. Maintain steady moisture so the roots swell quickly without becoming woody or splitting. Harvest while relatively small for the best texture and flavour. It grows well during Ireland’s cooler months, but seedlings should be protected from flea beetle, slugs and pigeons. Rotate with other brassicas to reduce disease problems.
