Brassica oleracea Capitata Group ‘Golden Acre’ is an early cabbage producing firm, round green heads surrounded by a compact frame of outer leaves. It can be harvested from midsummer or left to develop for an autumn crop, providing crisp leaves for steaming, stir-fries, coleslaw and soups. Sow under cover or in a seedbed, then transplant into full sun in fertile, deeply cultivated and firm soil. Maintain even moisture while the heads are forming and net plants against pigeons and cabbage white butterflies. Its compact growth is useful where vegetable-bed space is limited. It performs well in Ireland’s cool conditions, although crop rotation and neutral to alkaline soil help reduce the risk of clubroot and nutrient problems.
