Bougainvillea ‘Gl. Sanderiana’, commonly listed as Bougainvillea glabra ‘Sanderiana’, is a vigorous woody climber with glossy green leaves, thorny stems and brilliant purple papery bracts surrounding small white flowers. It can be trained against wires, around a frame or maintained as a container shrub through regular pruning. Grow in the brightest, sunniest position available in free-draining compost, watering thoroughly during active growth but allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Restricted roots and strong light encourage flowering. It is not suitable for year-round outdoor planting in Ireland and must be moved into a bright, frost-free conservatory or greenhouse before temperatures fall. Water sparingly during winter and handle the thorny stems carefully.
