Azalea mollis ‘Gibraltar’ Description

Azalea mollis ‘Gibraltar’ forms an open, bushy deciduous shrub reaching approximately 1.5 metres in height and spread. Deep crimson-orange buds open in late spring into large, slightly frilled rich orange flowers, each with a deeper yellow flare in the throat. The vivid blooms stand out clearly before the surrounding garden reaches full summer growth. Plant it as a specimen, within a woodland-edge border or among other deciduous azaleas. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but freely draining, humus-rich acidic soil. It is very hardy and dependable in Ireland, although shelter will help protect the flowers from wind and late frost. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing damaged growth.
