Azalea japonica ‘Toreador’ Description

Azalea japonica ‘Toreador’ develops into a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub with glossy dark green leaves and a broad, densely branched crown. Numerous broadly funnel-shaped flowers open in bright pink-red to red-violet shades during April and May. Mature plants generally reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and may spread equally wide or slightly wider. Use it as a flowering specimen, within an ericaceous border or in a large container. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in moist but freely draining acidic soil. It performs reliably in Irish gardens, provided the shallow root system remains cool and lime-free. Shelter the spring flowers from strong wind and late frost.
