Azalea japonica ‘Meme’ forms a compact evergreen shrub with small green leaves and a rounded, densely branched habit. Clear white funnel-shaped flowers appear generously during May, bringing light to partially shaded areas and combining easily with pink, purple or red-flowered ericaceous plants. Reaching around 60cm in height and spread, it fits comfortably into small gardens, border fronts and containers filled with ericaceous compost. Grow in gentle sun or partial shade in humus-rich acidic soil that remains moist but drains well. Irish conditions generally suit it, although shelter from cold drying winds will protect the evergreen foliage. Mulch annually and water container plants with rainwater where tap water is alkaline.
