Azalea japonica ‘Melle’ Description

Azalea japonica ‘Melle’ is a broad, spreading evergreen azalea with oval green leaves and an impressive display of layered hose-in-hose flowers during May and June. The blooms are pink with contrasting white margins, creating a soft two-tone effect across the shrub. Mature plants can reach approximately 1 to 1.5 metres in height and spread, making this a larger choice than many compact Japanese azaleas. Grow in partial shade in moist but freely draining, humus-rich acidic soil. It is fully hardy and generally reliable in Irish gardens, provided lime and stagnant winter water are avoided. Apply an annual mulch of leaf mould or composted bark to conserve moisture and protect the shallow roots.
