Azalea japonica ‘Johanna’ Description

Azalea japonica ‘Johanna’ is a slow-growing evergreen shrub with a compact, rounded habit and glossy dark green leaves. Masses of rich red to reddish-pink trumpet-shaped flowers open in late spring, producing a striking display above the dense foliage. During autumn and winter, the leaves often deepen to reddish-bronze or burgundy shades. Mature plants generally reach around 60 to 90cm high and wide, fitting easily into smaller gardens and patio containers. Grow in partial shade in moist but well-drained acidic soil, with gentle sun acceptable where the roots remain cool. It performs reliably in Ireland, but shelter from harsh winds and avoid lime, drought and prolonged waterlogging.
