Azalea japonica ‘Herbert’ Description

Azalea japonica ‘Herbert’ forms a dense evergreen shrub with dark green leaves and a compact, gently spreading outline. Masses of velvety pink to pink-purple trumpet-shaped flowers appear during spring, bringing rich colour to smaller gardens and partially shaded planting. Mature specimens commonly reach around 70 to 80cm high and may spread to approximately 90cm. Grow in moist but well-drained, humus-rich acidic soil in partial shade or gentle sun. It is hardy and generally reliable in Ireland, although strong wind can damage the flowers and dry conditions may cause leaf loss. Use ericaceous compost in containers and apply an annual mulch around plants growing in the ground.
