Azalea japonica Description

Azalea japonica is a general name used for compact Japanese azaleas within the Rhododendron genus. These slow-growing shrubs form dense mounds of small green leaves and produce generous displays of funnel-shaped flowers in spring, with the exact colour and flower form depending on the selection supplied. Most remain between 50cm and 1 metre high, making them useful in small gardens, containers, woodland borders and Japanese-inspired planting. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in moist but well-drained, humus-rich acidic soil. Ireland’s cool climate generally suits them, but lime, drought and stagnant winter water should be avoided. Mulch annually to protect the shallow roots and maintain even moisture.
